Redwood and Grant Transit Improvement Project

Tree Protection Complete, Removal Begins 2/13

  • Tree protection fencing being installed by contractors

  • Tree protection fencing installed along Redwood Boulevard

February 10, 2017

The Redwood and Grant Transit Improvement Project (RGTIP) is a six-month construction project to improve safety and operations at the Novato bus stop located on Redwood Boulevard between Grant Avenue and De Long Avenue. This downtown gateway is important for access to public transit throughout Marin County and the entire Bay Area. The planned enhancements will make the facility safer and more efficient for riders, drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and buses. Construction is set to begin the second week of February 2017 and will continue through July 2017. Please note that all construction schedules are subject to change due to weather restrictions and other unforeseen delays.

Recent Happenings
Last week, the consulting arborist, City of Novato staff, Marin Transit staff and the contractor met on site to review work procedures associated with tree protection measures and tree removal as specified in the project’s Tree Protection Plan. It was noted that one more tree, a Japanese flowering cherry tree previously listed as “mostly dead,” will be removed during this process. This change results in a total of 17 trees to be removed for the project.

This week, in spite of the strong rain, the contractor initiated site preparation work and installed protective fencing around trees that will be retained. The consulting arborist reviewed the contractor’s tree protection measures to make sure the work met the standards outlined in the Tree Protection Plan.

Next week, under the oversight of the consulting arborist, trees designated for removal will safely be taken out by Conservation Corps North Bay. Once the trees are removed, weather permitting, the construction contractor Thompson Builders will begin modifying the northbound and southbound curbs on Redwood Boulevard to allow for the temporary relocation of bus stops.

During this phase of construction, it is recommended that motorists:

  • Drive slower through the construction zone between Grant Avenue and De Long Avenue.
  • Be on the lookout for temporary lane closures and traffic redirection

Marin County Transit District and construction management staff are making every effort to limit any potential impact during construction and are working with the City of Novato and bus operators to notify bus riders, local businesses and residents of the planned work.
